HUMPI is now a UNESCO-recognized world heritage site and is famous for the Vijayanagara Empire spread around an area of 26 sq. km, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the eastern part of central Karnataka near the state border with Andhra Pradesh. It is 376 kilometres from Bengaluru and 165 kilometres from Hubli. The closest railway station is in Hosapete (Hospet), 13 kilometres away and the closest airport is 32 kilometres from Jindal Vijaynagar Airport in Toranagallu which has connectivity to Bengaluru.

Hirebenkal is one of the largest megalithic sites in Karnataka, India. This site, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, has approximately 400 megalithic structures that were built about 2800 years ago. Walking through the quiet ‘street’ dotted with scores of empty houses is like walking through a ghost town.

Pattabhirama Temple

Pattabhirama Temple is a beautiful structure that stands in the ruined city of Hampi. It is located at Kamalapur at a distance of 6 km from the main heritage site of Hampi. The temple is known for its intricate architecture. Even today it is a popular pilgrimage centre and stands as a reminder of the rich historical era.

Prasanna Virupaksha Temple

Prasanna Virupaksha temple is one of the oldest temples in Hampi. Built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, the temple is located near the main road to the Hampi bus stand and close to the Noblemen’s quarters after Chandikesvara temple.

Bhima’s Gateway

This gateway is a classic example of the Vijayanagara military architecture. The gate got its name from the legendary Bhima of the Hindu epic Mahabaratha.  A figure of Bhima – the strongest of the five Pandavas brothers – is carved on the gate.

Anantashayana Temple

Ananthashayana temple is located 10 km southwest of Hampi. This magnificent temple was built in 1524 CE by Sri Krishna Deva Raya. The rectangular Garbhagriha is massive – 70 feet tall, 20 feet wide and 60 feet in length! The beautifully carved vaulted dome on top of the Garbhagriha is further 30 feet tall!

Sugriva’s Cave

Sugreeva’s Cave was once home to the mythical monkey warrior Sugreeva, a great devotee of Lord Rama. The place is very peaceful and offers panoramic views.

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary is located in the Ballari district in Karnataka. This is Asia’s first sloth bear Sanctuary. It is spread over 82.72 km². The sanctuary was created exclusively for the conservation of the sloth bear. It is about 50 km from Ballari and about 15 km from the World Heritage Site Hampi.
